Universal Design Library Floor Plan/Virtual Tour

Howdy there Brewery Books Blog Readers! Today we are chatting about a Universal Design Library Floor Plan keeping compliance in mind with the Americans with Disabilities Act. I was tasked with creating a floor plan of my current library noting all the ADA and UDL elements to show that my library is accessible and that I understand how to apply the tenets of both. I began by creating a simple layout of my library on Canva. I work at a smaller school and so I have quite a small library in comparison to other schools. I have worked very hard to create an inclusive library, so this was an interesting assignment for me to be able to "critique" my work. This assignment also gave me the opportunity to realize the work that I still need to put in, or the suggestions I can bring to my administration and school board. Since I host several classes per day, I had to include space for those classes to meet, but I made sure the tables are at a level and spaced far enough apart in case a student is in a wheelchair. Most of the material, desks, tables, and service desk is all at sitting, accessible level. There is also signs at different heights, and flexible lighting throughout the library for students and patrons with sensory issues. I still have a lot of work to do, but for now, I am proud of the library I have created.

  4. Hi Leyna,
Excellent floor plan, I can tell that you followed UDL. The seats are flexible for all students and the shelves are student friendly for students to reach books. I also liked that you included a comfortable space for students to read with the couches.
